I use realism for focal points and familiarity and abstraction to allow for the mind of the viewer to create shapes and make concrete a reality from the suggested.
Think of the background as a sky of clouds where you might see shapes that your mind makes into animals or recognizable things. The mind wants to make sense of the randomness which is why we see things suggested in clouds and I want to add that effect into my art but as a secondary element.
I feel that my paintings should stand as simple decoration to those who want to hang them in their rooms and satisfy the mind when the viewer looks closer and opens their mind, but i want that choice to be the viewers not mine.
The combination of realism and abstraction allows me the luxury of the two main worlds of fine art, the unpretentious world of decoration that a child can appreciate and the intellectual sophistication of the conceptual artist.
